PROJECT INFORMATION
Taiwan has surpassed Japan as the nation with the lowest birth rate in Asia, underscoring the critical demographic challenges of a declining birth rate and a rapidly aging population. Demographic statistics indicate that Taiwan entered a "super-aged society" in 2025, with the elderly population projected to peak in 2050. This low birth rate inevitably transforms school campuses into vacant, underutilized spaces—an impact felt even more acutely in peripheral and rural regions.
Concurrently, despite the Taiwanese government's sustainable energy policies and carbon reduction targets, current progress suggests the nation will struggle to achieve comprehensive net-zero emissions by 2050. Consequently, next-generation architecture must spearhead this spatial and green-energy transition through adaptive architectural forms, high-performance building envelopes, and innovative spatial configurations.
"Revitalize" is an experimental project staged at Dujia Elementary School in the Qigu District of Tainan. It serves as a direct response to the compounding challenges of rural eldercare, school-closure transformations due to declining birth rates, and green energy symbiosis. Initiating a regional case study focused on peripheral areas, the project aims to reconnect user demographics and repurpose the vacant school spaces left behind by shifting demographics. It creates co-living spaces that foster intergenerational harmony between youth and seniors while integrating essential healthcare facilities. Ultimately, the design synthesizes natural elements and renewable energy systems with utility to advance toward a zero-carbon future.
