PROJECT INFORMATION
Taiwan’s vocational education is currently in a state of crisis. Following waves of educational reform and the rise of academic elitism, the balance of educational policy has shifted. Vocational high schools have become increasingly homogenized and indistinct, with technical mastery and the value of "learning by doing" buried under the rigid templates of academic transcripts. This, coupled with a deep-seated social stigma and the overarching trend of a declining birth rate, has created a devastating vicious cycle.

Kung-Tung Technical High School, a private Catholic vocational school in Taitung City, is not only my alma mater but a cornerstone of Taiwan’s vocational history. In 2023, it was placed on a Ministry of Education watchlist for potential closure. Its invaluable historical significance and educational spirit are now on the verge of vanishing.

"Loft of Artisans" is an architectural exploration into the sublimation of technical education and exchange spaces. Centered on Kung-Tung’s renowned woodworking heritage, the project envisions possibilities for preserving and evolving this technical legacy after the traditional school model exits the stage.

By focusing on multi-scale hands-on platforms and technical exchange hubs, the design explores the dialogue between the "Factory" (mechanical production) and the "Atelier" (Working Connections). It seeks to ground the essence of craft inheritance and knowledge sharing back into physical practice with equality and tangible presence, ultimately reconstructing the value and future possibilities of technical education.

"Factory" vs. "Atelier" (廠與場): In Mandarin, both are pronounced Chǎng. In English, I have translated this as the dialogue between the functional production site and the social/educational arena to maintain the conceptual depth.
